Public DNS servers are provided as free-to-use alternatives to the DNS servers supplied by your ISP.

Public DNS servers are often distributed world wide and may provide faster domain name resolving on your internet connection.

In addition, several of these DNS servers provide additional features like privacy, anti-phishing and adult content blocking.

A handful of Public DNS providers have been excluded, because their services fall far below the acceptable response time threshold. We encourage anyone who uses these servers to benchmark against some of the other servers listed above.

About the data

Every hour the performance data table is updated to reflect the average response time for each server. Public DNS providers usually host a primary and secondary server and the average of both servers is used for ranking.

The response time is derived from querying the Public DNS for a random domain's NS record. The domains queried are part of the TLD zones (.at, .be, .ca, .ch, .cz, .de, .es, .eu, .it, .nl, .no, .pt, .se) and can be active and inactive domain names. Basically the equivalent of timing the unix command: $ host -t ns

Geographically the queries are issued from servers in Central Europe to domains within the ccTLD zones listed above, which means that the accuracy of the response times may vary outside of Europe.
